How to Compare Construction Bids in a Spreadsheet (Don't Just Pick the Cheapest)

The lowest bid wins the job. That sentence describes how a lot of construction projects get awarded — and why a lot of construction projects end up over budget.

Here is the scenario that plays out constantly across commercial and residential projects: You solicit bids from four subcontractors for MEP rough-in on a mid-size commercial fitout. The bids come back at $148,000, $162,000, $175,000, and $183,000. You award to the low bidder.
